about

‘Max The Pirate Cat’ proved to be so popular for Carys that it was inevitable she would revisit the “Max” universe and regale us with more swashbuckling tales of derring do.

In this imaginative tale, we hear how Lily sets off in search of adventure, not following her seafarer brother Max, but on land, where she eventually finds her place in a world of Smugglers and Excisemen.

The song is a joyous, colourful romp, full of humour and it’s a wonderful addition to a growing ‘Max the Pirate Cat’ musical (and animated) world.

As with Max, there is a delightful video, with sketches drawn by Carys, to accompany the ‘When Lily Comes to Town’ single. The video premieres on her youtube channel at 8:00pm UK time, Friay 1st April 2022.

WHEN LILY COMES TO TOWN - lyrics

Who do you see on the cliff top side?
A little white cat with bright green eyes
Patient for hours will she sit and bide
Until the tide comes in

Under the moon and the stars she sits
As the seabirds roost in precarious pits
Night draws on and still she waits
This is Lily's time

Am E
An hour til dawn when night begins to fade
Am E
That's the time when smugglers ply their trade
Dm
They pillage rum and contraband
Am
They roll their barrels o'er the land
E Am
In finest gold dubloons they will be paid

The Nassau runners need no moon nor stars
No fear they will be spotted from afar
In middle of the darkest night
They have no need of lantern light
Their leader shines as bright as any star

F C
She patrols the cliffs in dead of night
Dm E
A pretty feline beacon ~ the smugglers need no light

G C
For Lily is the smugglers' cat
F C
Pure white she leads the way
F C D D7
When we follow her along the beach we'll never go astray
G C
Well paid in milk and finest fish
F C
She never lets us down
F C
The governor better run and hide
G Am
When Lily comes to town

Born behind the bawdy house in town
Youngest kitten in a litter of renown
She loved exploring in the yard
But mother said “don't go too far
There's dangers in this world - you stay at home”

Her brother Max had wandered off one day
Become a pirate cat or so they say
“Don't lave the land” her mother cried
“I cannot lose another child”
So Lily sought adventure on the land

She patrols the cliffs...

She wandered far along the island shore
Found secret caves and started to explore
A score of barrels, stout and grand
All neatly stacked upon the sand
The like of which she'd never seen before

She took a catnap then retraced her way
'Twas nighttime now, when smugglers like to play
She saw them rolling yet more kegs
And purring she rubbed round their legs
But the excise men had followed from the bay

She patrols the cliffs...

The sound of voices carried on the wind
On smuggler gasped “They're coming up behind!
It isn't safe for us to stay
It's time that we were far away
But without a lamp our way we cannot find”

Up Lily jumped, her new friends for to save
“Come follow me, you need not be afraid”
Her fur so sleek and softly white
The smugglers didn't need a light
She led them all back safely to their cave

So when the night draws on the boats come through
Unloading casks of rum and whisky too
The governor's men at night are blind
The smugglers leave them far behind
For Lily always knows just what to do

She patrols the cliffs...
